Exploring Philip II and Olympias's First Night in Historical Fiction and My Novel, Alexein

Unveiling the Serpent and the Falcon:

I recently dove deep into researching Philip II and Olympias's wedding and their first night—and let me tell you, it was a fascinating journey!

The political romance, the fiery dynamics between them… it was captivating. But it also got me thinking: how have other novelists tackled this intensely private moment in history?

I started my research without fully appreciating just how young Olympias was when she married Philip II – a mere seventeen years old, compared to Philip's mid-thirties. Clearly, Philip was experienced, having had other wives and concubines, while Olympias was likely a virgin. This stark contrast is crucial to understanding their relationship.

The question immediately arose: how do I weave their complex dynamic—their love, their ambition, their inevitable jealousy—into a compelling narrative leading to the birth of their son, the legendary Alexander the Great?

Alexander the Great. The name itself evokes epic battles, vast empires, and unmatched military genius. Yet, behind this iconic figure lie the equally compelling, if more shadowy, stories of his parents, Philip II and Olympias. While history offers glimpses into their tumultuous relationship, the intimate details of their lives remain elusive. This lack of information, however, has not stopped novelists from venturing into this fertile ground.

Surprisingly, finding a published novel that explicitly details Philip II and Olympias's wedding night is difficult. Most historical novels about Alexander focus on his life, offering only brief background details of his parents' relationship. The intimate moments are usually left to the reader's imagination, hinted at through interactions and characterization rather than direct description. This is a smart move by most authors. The intimate details are often speculative, and overly explicit scenes could detract from the overall historical accuracy of the novel.

Have you read any novels that depict this pivotal moment? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

The challenge for authors is finding the right balance—creating an engaging narrative while maintaining historical plausibility. The temptation to embellish, particularly when so little is known, is strong. Yet, excessive speculation can easily undermine the story’s credibility.

To illustrate this challenge, let's imagine a possible scene…

My novel, Alexein, also grapples with this challenge. I initially underestimated the importance of Philip and Olympias's relationship. I hadn’t anticipated the depth of the research required to portray their dynamic accurately. I discovered how their political motivations intertwined with their personal feelings, making their relationship far more complex than I had imagined. I had to go back and totally rewrite that portion of the book. My first draft focused only briefly on their wedding night; to make the assassination of Philip II impactful, I realized I needed to provide a much richer picture of their relationship.

Alexein, Volume 1: The Golden Dawn, begins with a prophecy that foreshadows Alexander's rise. Volume One concludes with Alexander's ascension to the throne and Philip II's assassination. Even that section will be split into two volumes!

Volume ONE: The Golden Dawn (Alexander's birth to age three)

Volume TWO: The Golden Sun (Philip's assassination, Alexander becomes King)

Volume THREE: The Golden Shield (Alexander's Eastern campaign, including the Battle of Issus)

Volume FOUR: The Golden Sand (Alexander's conquest of Egypt)

My aim was, and still is, to provide a fresh perspective on Alexander's life, grounded in historical accuracy, while making their world come alive for the reader. I avoided reading any novels about Alexander beforehand, focusing solely on original historical sources to maintain the purity of my own creative vision. It's been a challenging but ultimately rewarding journey to unravel the layers of history and human relationships—a fascinating story waiting to be shared.
